Electric Car Charger

Please submit the following information:

  1. Floor plan of the garage in which the charger/receptacle will be located. Indicate the location of the proposed charger/receptacle and any other related items (disconnect switch, etc.).
  2. Proposed electrical plan and layout. Include all fixtures, charger/receptacle, means of disconnect, wiring types and sizes, conduit type and size, method of grounding, distance from the electrical service panel to the proposed charger/receptacle, and all other affected or proposed electrical features.
    1. The charging station shall be on a dedicated circuit with overcurrent protection that is rated a minimum of 125% of the maximum load of the electric vehicle supply equipment.
    2. Provide the amp rating of the proposed charger. For electric vehicle supply equipment rated at more than 60 amps or more than 150 volts to ground, disconnecting means shall be provided in a readily accessible location.
    3. Provide existing and proposed electrical service panel schedules and a load calculation that includes the proposed new circuit to verify that the existing service is adequate to serve the proposed new load.
  3. The manufacturer's installation specifications for the proposed charger.

Significant Code Requirements

  1. All new electrical service panels and/or circuit breakers must be installed in compliance with all manufacturer installation specifications and product listings for the equipment involved (Article 110.3, 2024 NEC).
  2. Branch circuits shall be provided and installed in compliance with Article 210 of the 2024 NEC.
  3. All branch circuits within the panel must be labeled in a permanent manner to identify the area that is served by that specific branch circuit.
  4. Grounding must be provided in accordance with Article 250 of the 2024 NEC.

Grounding Electrode System

  1. A grounding electrode system is required to be installed that consists of the metal water service line piping (connection to the water service piping shall be made at a point near to where the water service enters the building through the foundation wall or floor slab, and a bonding jumper shall be placed around all water meters connecting the interior water distribution system), a bonding jumper must be installed at the water heater piping, and two (2) 8’-0” driven ground rods a minimum of 6’-0” apart that complies with Article 250.52(5) on the exterior. (Article 250.52, 250.53, 2017 NEC).

Inspections

The inspections listed here are required for all types of electric car charger projects. Some inspections may not apply to your installation, while additional inspections may be needed based on the scope of work for your project. A complete list of your required inspections will be listed on the Plan Approval Notice that will be attached to the approved plans.

To schedule an inspection, please call 630-260-2050 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Inspections must be scheduled no later than 3:30 PM the day before the desired inspection date.

Type of Inspection When to Call
Footing If required, once the foundation has been excavated and forms are in place, but prior to placing concrete.
Underground Electric If required, performed when the conduit is installed within the trench, but prior to concealment.
Rough Framing If required, once the framing is complete, but prior to insulation being installed and /or concealment.
Rough Electrical If required, conducted once all rough-ins are complete, but prior to insulation installation and/or concealment.
Final Conducted when the entire project is complete.
