Commercial Fire Sprinkler Systems

Please submit the following information:
- Technical submission for the automatic sprinkler system, to include: designs, drawings, and specifications that establish the scope and standard of quality for materials, workmanship, equipment, and systems. Plans shall also indicate the use of rooms, room numbers (if applicable), and location of sprinkler heads. Also indicate ceiling construction and any changes in height, such as offsets, beams, and girders.
- Hydraulic calculations.
- If the sprinkler system or modifications to the system are prepared by an Illinois-licensed design professional (architect, structural engineer, or professional engineer), the submission must be signed and sealed. If the sprinkler system or modifications to the system are prepared by a technician who holds a valid NICET level 3 or 4 Certification in fire protection technology, automatic sprinkler system layout, a copy of their NICET level 3 or 4 Certification must accompany the submission. Manufacturer cut sheets.
- Provide one (1) copy of the manufacturer’s cut sheets of all devices, to include: pipes, sprinkler heads, fittings, hangers, all control valves, check valves, and similar.
- Provide one (1) copy of the Plat of Survey that identifies the location of any new water supply line for an automatic sprinkler system.

Automatic Sprinkler Requirements when Remodeling
Section 1103.5.5 (IFC, Construction Requirements for Existing Buildings, Fire Safety Requirements for Existing Buildings) When construction is proposed. An approved automatic sprinkler system shall be installed in existing buildings in accordance with Section 903 (Automatic Sprinkler Systems) when the cost of proposed construction (i.e., alterations and additions) in any given year (12-month period) is at least 50 percent of the value of the building. The value of the building or structure (excluding land) shall be established by the Milton Township Assessors' assessment records for the year prior to the initial remodeling or reconstruction. Owners of tax-exempt properties shall produce documentation verifying the building's valuation, which will be subject to the review and approval of the building code official.
Backflow Preventer
City of Wheaton Code Sec. 74-264(c) states, “Where a public water supply or an auxiliary water supply is used for a fire protection system, reduced pressure principle backflow preventers shall be installed on fire safety systems connected to the public water supply when: (1) The fire safety system contains antifreeze, fire retardant or other chemicals; (2) Water is pumped into the system from another source;…(4) There is a connection whereby another source can be introduced into the fire safety system.” An RPZ/DA is required for all fire sprinkler systems that have an FDC and provide a metered bypass on the RPZ/DA.
Inspections
The inspections listed below are required for all Fire Sprinkler Systems. Additional inspections may be needed based on the scope of work. If additional inspections are required, they will be listed on the Plan Approval Notice attached to the approved plans. The types of required inspections are:
