AT&T Installing Fiber Optic Services in Some Wheaton Areas

Community Updates Posted on January 26, 2026

AT&T crews and subcontractors will soon begin installing infrastructure for fiber optic services in some areas of our community. This work will require access to public utility easements and right-of-way areas on and around residential properties. Digging and equipment placement will occur only within the public easement area.

This work is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. Impacted properties will receive advanced notice from AT&T through a letter and door hangers placed prior to the start of work.

Overview of Upcoming Work:

  1. Utility Locates – Crews will mark underground utilities with paint and flags to guide excavation. These locates will be performed through the J.U.L.I.E./811 system by the United States Infrastructure Company (USIC) and, in some cases, ComEd. Please do not remove these markings.
  2. Directional Boring – Once utility locates are complete, AT&T contractors will install conduit (a protective tube used to house, route, and protect electrical wiring) and handholes (an enclosure used to provide access for installing underground utility cables) in easements and right-of-way areas. Door hangers will be placed prior to work, and crews may knock on doors if access to a yard is needed.
  3. Cable Placement – After conduits are installed, crews will pull fiber cable through the new conduit. Door hangers will be placed prior to work, and crews may knock on doors if access to a yard is needed.
  4. Cable Splicing – Crews will access handholes to make cable connections. This step may require extended periods of time in easements or right-of-way areas.
  5. Fiber Service Activation – Once all work is complete, residents can request new AT&T fiber service at att.com/internet.

Please note: This work will often result in digging and disturbance of small areas. However, AT&T will restore areas to match pre-existing conditions, once all work is completed. View the full notice from AT&T here.
