During the week of Feb. 27-March 3, 2023 the Wheaton Police Department conducted the first of four traffic safety campaigns in which patrol officers seek to educate and enforce driver safety issues in the community. The focus of this recent safety campaign was Scott’s Law, also known as the “Move Over” Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move to another lane (if it is safe to do so) when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights on.
Of the 248 traffic contacts during this period, officers issued written warnings or tickets that included:
- 61 Scott’s Law violations (improper approach/passing of an emergency vehicle)
- 36 speeding violations
- 7 violations for operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device (i.e. cell phone)
- 5 arrests for driving without a valid driver’s license (no valid/revoked/suspended driver’s license)
The next safety campaign will focus on distracted driving during the month of April.
We appreciate your help to keep Wheaton’s roads safe for all drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
