[ARCHIVED] Police Respond to Attempted Ruse Burglary

police car

The Wheaton Police Department recently responded to a report of an attempted ruse burglary in which an individual stated they were with the City of Wheaton Water Division and needed to enter a resident's home for service. The resident refused to allow the individual into the home and reported the incident to Wheaton Police.

Employees with the City of Wheaton's Water Division and other divisions of the Public Works Department will have identification with them to confirm their credentials with the City of Wheaton. If an employee of the City or a utility company visits your home requesting access without a prior appointment, you should ask for their identification. As the resident in this situation correctly did, if you are uncertain if the person visiting your home is there for legitimate purposes, you should call 9-1-1 and an officer will respond to verify the individual.
