[ARCHIVED] Community Message: Planned Protest on 6/6

police general photo

The Wheaton and Glen Ellyn Police Departments are aware of a protest planned for Saturday, June 6, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. along Roosevelt Road from Main Street in Wheaton east to Main Street in Glen Ellyn. The event is advertised by organizers as a peaceful protest in which participants are planning to hold signs along the sidewalks. Access to businesses and private drives will remain open, but we encourage customers to call ahead to check business operating hours. Protests of this nature are a protected form of the Constitutional right to free speech and assembly.

We ask drivers in this area to please be cautious of increased pedestrian traffic and be aware of possible traffic delays or temporary road closures, if necessary.

The Wheaton and Glen Ellyn Police Departments have been in contact with the event’s organizer, and officers from both communities will be present for everyone’s safety. We expect this will be a peaceful gathering and we respect the right of people to assemble peacefully, but we remind attendees that violent criminal acts will not be tolerated.

The City of Wheaton and the Wheaton Police Department will continue to keep the community up-to-date.
