At approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019 the Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the apartment building at 121 North Cross.

Upon arrival, fire crews identified a dryer fire in a fifth-floor apartment. The fire was brought under control within minutes by the fire sprinkler system. The unit where the fire originated was occupied at the time of the fire, and the occupants escaped safely.

All other building occupants safely escaped the building, and the incident did not result in any injuries. The unit with the dryer fire sustained smoke damage, water damage, and it was posted uninhabitable. All remaining residents were able to re-occupy the building.

Investigators from the Wheaton Fire Department conducted a fire investigation. The cause of the fire is deemed accidental and appears to have been related to the operation of a clothes dryer. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time. The City of Wheaton Building Department was on the scene. The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by the Wheaton Police Department and several fire departments from neighboring communities. The building was turned back over to the property management company after the fire.
