At approximately 12:30 p.m. on October 20, 2018 the Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 1318 East Evergreen. Upon arrival, fire crews identified a fire in the living room and crawl space of a single-family home. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. The building was under renovation and was not occupied at the time of fire. The fire did not cause any injuries.
Investigators from the Wheaton Fire Department conducted a fire investigation. The cause of the fire is deemed accidental and appears to have been related to improper disposal of staining materials. Damages are estimated to be at $50,000. The City of Wheaton Building Department was called to the scene. The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by the Wheaton Police Department and several fire departments from neighboring communities. The building was posted unsafe for occupancy and turned back over to the owner.
