On May 10, 2018, the Wheaton Police Department was informed that information was appearing on social media warning of a potential shooting to occur at Wheaton North High School on May 11, 2018.

Detectives were immediately assigned to investigate the information. They were able to identify an 18-year-old Wheaton male as the originator of the alleged threat. Detectives interviewed this individual and the individual's guardian. It was determined the individual was not an active threat. Detectives confirmed through a search that the individual did not have any weapons and there was no evidence of plans to engage in violence.

The Wheaton Police Department worked in conjunction with Community Unit School District 200 to ensure it would be safe to continue with the planned school day.

The City of Wheaton issued statements on Twitter and Facebook during this investigation to inform the community. You can follow the City's official Facebook and Twitter accounts, which are at www.facebook.com/CityOfWheaton and www.twitter.com/CityOfWheaton, or search for @CityOfWheaton.
