City Council Approves Increases to Home Rule Sales Tax and Natural Gas Tax Rates

At its Jan. 20 meeting, the Wheaton City Council adopted ordinances that will increase the Home Rule Sales Tax from 1% to 1.25% starting July 1, 2026, and update the municipal gas use tax rate from $0.03 to $0.05 per therm starting March 1, 2026. These increases will be used to help fund two major projects to improve Wheaton's public safety facilities: remodeling the Wheaton Police Station and replacing Fire Station 39 (located at 1590 S. President St.). A 2025 comprehensive study of the City's facilities highlighted significant concerns with both buildings, recommending remodeling the Police Station and replacing Fire Station 39 as the most cost-effective options for repairing and modernizing these buildings to meet the City's needs.

The Home Rule Sales Tax applies to items sold in Wheaton, except for the sale of food at restaurants and prescription/non-prescription medicines. For the natural gas tax rate change, it is estimated to increase an average Wheaton household's Nicor natural gas bill by approximately $1.78 per month, or $21.36 annually. The City has not changed the natural gas tax rate in over 15 years, and this is the first increase in the Home Rule Sales Tax since 2009. For more information on these ordinances, see the Jan. 20 City Council meeting agenda and supporting materials.

Tips to Stay Safe During Extremely Cold Weather

The City of Wheaton encourages residents to stay safe during extremely cold weather. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends the following precautions:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible and limit your exposure to the cold;
  • Dress in layers and keep dry;
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbors who are at risk and may need additional assistance;
  • Know the symptoms of cold-related health issues such as frostbite and hypothermia and seek medical attention if health conditions are severe;
  • Ensure that pets have a warm shelter area with unfrozen water;
  • Make sure your vehicle has an emergency kit that includes an ice scraper, blanket and flashlight - and keep the fuel tank above half full.

For more cold weather information, visit the City's website.

ComEd to Perform Tree Trimming in Select Areas

Throughout the year, ComEd will trim trees, branches, and vines that interfere or have the potential to interfere with power lines. This work helps prevent safety hazards and power outages. Residents who are in affected areas will receive a notice from ComEd regarding this work.

The City of Wheaton will also provide information on ComEd's tree trimming work directly on the City’s website. Trimming in the areas shown on the webpage typically begins within three months of the posting date.

In some cases, tree removal may be required. The remaining tree stumps are treated with an approved herbicide to prevent future regrowth. Herbicide will be applied by state-licensed applicators. All work is performed by trained, qualified arborists. For more information, visit www.ComEd.com/Trees or call 1-800-Edison-1 (1-800-334-7661).
