Pumpkins

Get Ready to Compost: Pumpkin Smash Happening this Saturday

The City of Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission will once again host a “Pumpkin Smash” drop-off for pumpkins right after Halloween. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon in Commuter Parking Lot 9 at Liberty Drive & Carlton Avenue.

This collection will allow you to drop off pumpkins (please remove decorations first) to be composted, rather than going to the landfill.

Furnace Installation

Stay Safe and Warm This Season: Permit Required for Furnace Replacement & Installation

As the colder weather sets in, you may realize that your furnace needs to be replaced. As a reminder, a permit is required for any new furnace installations or replacements in the City of Wheaton.

Modern furnaces are more complex and have additional installation requirements compared to older models. By obtaining a permit, the City of Wheaton will conduct an inspection of your new furnace to ensure it has been installed per code and is safe for use.

Additionally, when a new furnace is installed, the code requires that the residence complies with the carbon monoxide alarm requirements. Carbon monoxide alarms are required to be installed outside all sleeping areas in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms (combination smoke alarm/carbon monoxide alarms are allowed). If there is a fuel-burning appliance located within a bedroom or its attached bathroom, a carbon monoxide alarm shall be installed within the bedroom. Carbon monoxide alarms shall be hardwired or have a 10-year battery.

If you have any questions, contact the City of Wheaton Building Department at 630-260-2050.
