School Bus

Welcome Back to School: Wheaton Police Department Bus Safety Reminders

Wheaton schools are back in session. We need the community’s help to make this a safe and successful school year.

When to Stop for School Buses:

  • On a two-lane road, vehicles traveling in both directions MUST stop when a school bus is loading/unloading.
  • On a road with 4 or more lanes, vehicles traveling in the opposite direction do not have to stop and may proceed with caution. Vehicles traveling in the same direction as a stopped bus MUST stop.
  • On a divided highway (where there is an unpaved space at least 5 feet wide, a raised median or physical barrier), vehicles behind the bus MUST stop. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution.

Hear from Wheaton Police in this video to learn about school bus safety.

CBS Evening News Features the Wheaton Municipal Band

The Wheaton Municipal Band’s July 26 concert at Edman Chapel featured a special guest conductor: retired U.S. Air Force Band conductor and WWII veteran Col. Arnald Gabriel. The story was highlighted nationally by CBS Evening News in On the Road with Steve Hartman, which featured Col. Gabriel’s meaningful return.

More than 25 years ago, Gabriel promised current Band Director Dr. Bruce Moss he would conduct at age 100. After turning 100 this year, he kept that promise by conducting the Wheaton Municipal Band remotely from his home in Virginia, with the band and audience able to view him as he led the band in “America, the Beautiful” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
