INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS

Storm Sewer

A Closer Look: Storm Sewer Work in Wheaton

The City of Wheaton's Sewer Division is responsible for providing uninterrupted service to all residents served by the City’s sanitary and storm sewer systems through proactive maintenance and repair programs. This includes maintaining about 175 miles of storm sewer infrastructure throughout the City.

So far in 2025, the Sewer Division has replaced over 1,800 feet of storm sewer and 12 storm sewer structures to address aging infrastructure and help reduce overland flooding.

This month, crews will begin a storm sewer pipe replacement project on Brookside Circle. This project will include replacing 400 feet of storm sewer and installing six new storm sewer structures in the area.

Replacing storm sewers and structures is critical to managing storm water effectively — ensuring proper drainage and reducing the risk of localized flooding during heavy rain events. By addressing infrastructure needs, the City ensures the long-term reliability and efficiency of its storm water management system.

Road Work

Annual Road Program to Begin Soon

Contracted crews will soon begin work to improve Wheaton roads and infrastructure as part of the City’s annual Road, Sewer and Water Rehabilitation program. You can see a list of the roads and infrastructure scheduled to be improved through this program at www.wheaton.il.us/roads. The City will be providing updates on this webpage.

This year’s Annual Road Program includes improvements in several areas, including resurfacing sections of Lorraine Road, Stoddard Avenue, and Blanchard Street; reconstruction of a portion of Crescent Street; and resurfacing in parts of the Snyders, Legends and Hunters Glen subdivisions.

If your property will be directly affected by this work, you will receive notices with more information and instructions before work begins. We will also post signs in work areas before crews begin working.

Check out this video to hear from a City of Wheaton engineer about the program.

Stay Safe: What to Do During a Flood

Illinois is prone to flooding, and floods can create hazardous conditions for both residents and first responders. That’s why it’s essential to stay informed and take steps to protect you and your family.

Follow these tips to stay safe during a flood:

  • Seek higher ground immediately
  • Stay alert to flash flood areas, such as canals, streams, drainage channels, and underpasses
  • Be ready to evacuate quickly with an emergency evacuation bag
  • If time allows, move essential items to upper floors
  • Avoid using electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water
  • If you must leave your home, never walk through moving water

Message from Mayor Suess

Working with Government Partners to Make our Community Better

One of the things that makes Wheaton such a special place to live, work and visit is the strong spirit of collaboration among our local government partners. Whether it’s the Wheaton Park District, Community Unit School District (CUSD) 200, DuPage County, or other partners, working together allows us to create a stronger community.

Community Unit School District 200:

With the shared goal of creating safe school communities, there are many areas in which the City’s Police Department and CUSD 200 collaborate. One recent example is the expansion of the D.A.R.E. Program into all Wheaton elementary schools. The Wheaton Police Department now leads a 10-week curriculum for 5th grade students in all CUSD 200 elementary schools, teaching students lessons on the negative effects of alcohol, tobacco and vape consumption; communication; kindness; online safety; becoming good citizens and other topics. In partnership with CUSD 200, the Wheaton Police Department also hosted Neighborhood Roll Calls throughout the summer, many of which were hosted at CUSD 200 schools. This year’s Roll Calls had a special focus on how CUSD 200 and Wheaton Police work together to keep Wheaton’s school communities safe.

DuPage County:

Prairie Path Improvements: The City of Wheaton works with DuPage County on projects that enhance daily life for residents. Recently, the County reconstructed a portion of the Prairie Path along Carlton Avenue, between Roosevelt Road and Liberty Drive. The improvements, including a new 8-foot-wide concrete path, enhanced drainage, and landscape restoration, have increased the safety, accessibility, and enjoyment of this well-used trail. Cooperation between DuPage County and the City of Wheaton resulted in the County completing these improvements, with an agreement that the City will now assume responsibility for the maintenance of this concrete path.

DuPage County Governmental Center Zoning: The City and County entered into an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) to establish a new zoning framework for the DuPage County Governmental Center (DPCGC).

Transferring certain administrative responsibilities related to zoning entitlement processes from the City to the County will streamline operations, improve the efficiency of governmental functions at the DPCGC, and strengthen coordination between the two entities. The County will be able to conduct the necessary public hearings to solicit feedback directly from their neighbors and greater constituents, while the Wheaton City Council maintains the final zoning authority.

This collaborative framework helps ensure that future development and uses on the property align with the zoning regulations, balance the interests of surrounding neighborhoods, and are appropriate for the area.

Additionally, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office will assume primary law enforcement responsibilities for the property. With the Sheriff’s Office headquartered on-site, this shift creates an even more efficient emergency response model and allows our officers to focus policing efforts in other parts of our City. The Wheaton Police Department will remain available and ready to assist the Sheriff’s Office when needed through ongoing mutual aid coordination.

Storm Water Improvements: The City remains focused on storm water management by maintaining and replacing storm sewers and structures — working to ensure proper drainage and reduce the risk of localized flooding. Over the past two years, the City completed two major flood improvement projects: Dorset Drive and Cadillac Drive & Wakeman Avenue. These improvements were partially funded by DuPage County Stormwater Management American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Grants. This is yet another example of how City and County efforts work together to enhance our community.

Wheaton Municipal Band:

From June through early August, the Wheaton Municipal Band performs free Thursday night concerts at Memorial Park. These concerts, supported collaboratively by the City of Wheaton, Park District through providing the beautiful Memorial Park bandshell, Band Commission, and Friends of the Wheaton Municipal Band, offer unforgettable live performances and showcase our shared dedication to the arts and music right here in Wheaton.

Wheaton Park District:

Each year, the Wheaton Park District hosts the City’s Fourth of July Parade, bringing together decorated floats, community groups, bands, and schools. Thousands of residents and visitors line the parade route to celebrate Independence Day and enjoy this cherished tradition. The City is proud to participate in this event, which showcases the spirit, pride, and unity of our community. In addition to the parade, the Park District organizes the community’s annual fireworks show, with a festive evening of food and music, and an unforgettable display at Graf Park. It’s a great example of how local government organizations, like the Park District, help create shared memorable experiences for our entire community.

And this is just a fraction of the City’s ongoing collaboration efforts throughout the year. By coordinating across agencies, we amplify our ability to deliver meaningful programs, vibrant community events, and essential services with greater efficiency and impact.
