Wheaton Honors 10 Recipients of Good Citizens AwardsTo recognize outstanding students and adults whose selflessness, generosity and service to Wheaton make them extraordinary community members, the Wheaton Community Relations Commission presented Good Citizens Awards to 10 individuals at the May 19, 2025, Wheaton City Council Meeting. This annual awards program invites the community to nominate outstanding citizens for volunteer service for schools, religious institutions, nursing homes, civic groups, nonprofit organizations or other act of volunteerism that benefit the community. Temporary Road Closures for Memorial Day Parade Monday, May 26The American Legion Post 76 will host a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Wheaton. The parade begins at the corner of Union Avenue and Hale Street proceeding west on Union Avenue, turning south on West Street (where it will cross the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Roosevelt Road), and ending at the Wheaton Cemetery. From approximately 9 a.m. to noon, traffic on Plamondon Road between Wheaton Cemetery and Orchard Road will be one-way southbound only. From approximately 9:45 a.m. to noon, Roosevelt Road between Carlton Avenue and Hale Street will be closed to traffic. Additionally, the following streets will be closed to traffic from approximately 9 a.m. to noon: - Hale Street between Wesley Street and Union Avenue
- Wheaton Avenue between Wesley Street and Union Avenue
- Union Avenue between Main Street and Gary Avenue
- West Street between Franklin Street and Roosevelt Road
- Wesley Street between Wheaton Avenue and Gary Avenue
- Front Street between Wheaton Avenue and Gary Avenue
- Liberty Drive at West Street
- Illinois Street/Childs Street at West Street
- Park Avenue at Warrenville Road
- Elm Street at Warrenville Road
- Warrenville Road between Roosevelt Road and Plamondon Road
- Plamondon Road closed to northbound traffic between Warrenville Road and Orchard Road
During the event, these streets will be adequately staffed with uniformed officers to assist and direct traffic. Wheaton Police Invite Community to Participate in Town Hall on Thursday, May 29The Wheaton Police Department will host a Town Hall meeting on Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 303 W. Wesley Street, in the City Council Chambers. Residents are encouraged to attend and learn about topics including highlights from the 2024 annual report, the department’s technology, modern policing, officer training, the role of social services, and community safety education. The Town Hall will include an interactive presentation by members of the Wheaton Police Department, followed by an opportunity for participants to ask questions. For individuals who are unable to attend in person, this event will also be shared live via Zoom, and the City will record the event. Wheaton Police Participating in National "Click It or Ticket" Campaign Through May 27Now through May 27, the Wheaton Police Department will participate in a national "Click It or Ticket" campaign, reminding drivers and passengers to buckle their seat belts for everyone's safety. Additional patrols will participate in this high-visibility enforcement initiative over the Memorial Day holiday to draw attention to seat belt use and help ensure everyone makes it to their destinations safely. The "Click It or Ticket” campaign is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Wheaton Police to Host Neighborhood Roll Call Events this SummerStarting in June, the Wheaton Police Department will bring back its Neighborhood Roll Call outreach events to connect with residents and share community safety information. This year, in partnership with Community Unit School District (CUSD) 200, these events will be hosted at local school sites on select Tuesdays beginning at 6:30 p.m. Visit www.wheaton.il.us/RollCall for event dates and locations. This year's Roll Call events will have a special focus on how CUSD 200 and the Wheaton Police Department are working together to keep Wheaton’s school communities safe. Topics discussed will include: - CUSD 200's approach to school safety
- A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) Training
- D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
- School resource officers
- Local traffic concerns
Each Roll Call will have a presentation by the Wheaton Police Department and CUSD 200 representatives, followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. While each event is held at an individual school, they are organized to include other nearby schools. Residents are encouraged to attend the event associated with their school to meet the officers and school leaders who serve their area. These events are open to everyone in the community, and there will be activities for children. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Wheaton Municipal Band Concert Season Begins June 12The Wheaton Municipal Band is back for another summer of performances and kicks off their season on Thursday, June 12 at Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave. Every Thursday, through August 7, as weather permits, the band will hold a concert in the bandshell starting at 7:30 p.m. These events are free to attend, and all are welcome. Marking the band’s 96th season, the June 12 opening concert will feature students from Wheaton middle school bands in a unique side-by-side performance. Noah Taylor, arranger and composer for the West Point Band, will join in as the band performs several of his works honoring the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. During the June 12, July 2, July 17, and July 31 concerts, the Wheaton Lions Club will be collecting food donations and other items needed by the People's Resource Center (PRC) for distribution to anyone in need. Drop off items such as non-perishable food, personal care products, cleaning supplies, and diapers at the Wheaton Lions Club's truck parked on Wheaton Avenue. Wheaton North High School Student Named Winner of the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for Illinois District 3Congratulations to Wheaton North High School student Sol Maria Antunez, winner of the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for Illinois District 3. Congresswoman Delia Ramirez recently honored Wheaton North students at a reception, joined by Mayor Suess and Wheaton North Art Teacher Danielle Wennmaker. Sol Maria's painting, "Serene Escape," was selected to be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year as part of the nationwide high school art competition. Sol Maria will also travel to Washington, D.C. for the national awards banquet. This year, two additional Wheaton North students were also recognized for their outstanding work. Amanda Hanson earned 2nd place for her piece "Doom Scrolling," and Ellie Postma received 3rd place for "Connecting Point." Art pieces from all participants in the competition are proudly displayed in the Congresswoman’s district offices.

City of Wheaton Offering Free Mulch to ResidentsThe City of Wheaton now offers free wood chips to its residents for pickup. Mulch can be picked up at the Municipal Parking Lot #9 (Liberty & Carlton), in the southwest corner of the parking lot. The mulch is the result of all the in-town tree trimmings and tree removals done by Public Works Forestry Crews. This program is the City of Wheaton’s Environmental Initiative to recycle our material and reinvest it back into the community.

"Walk Your Wheels" in Downtown WheatonWith warmer weather comes more pedestrian and bicycle traffic, especially in downtown Wheaton. To help keep everyone safe, the City of Wheaton does not allow you to ride bicycles, skateboards, scooters, in-line skates or roller skates on the sidewalks within the heart of the downtown. While you can still ride on the streets, if you choose to go on the sidewalk, you must "walk your wheels" within the boundaries of the following streets: Wesley Street to the north; Cross Street to the east; Willow Street to the south; and West Street to the west. New Date: DuPage County Safety Action Plan Event Taking Place on May 22Due to the inclement weather, DuPage County and the City of Elmhurst have rescheduled the DuPage County Safety Action Plan pop-up event. The event will now take place on Thursday, May 22 from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the intersection of York Street and the Illinois Prairie Path. This is an opportunity to engage in family-friendly activities, understand the plan’s traffic safety recommendations, and learn about the new Safe Travel for All initiative to reduce serious injuries and traffic fatalities on our roads. Stop by to learn how the plan is taking shape to make roads safer for people in Elmhurst and throughout DuPage County.

Join us for the unveiling of Wheaton's very own commissioned mural, part of this summer's Waves of DuPage Beautiful Cities Public Art project. To celebrate the exhibit, Hokusai and Ukiyo-e: The Floating World at the College of DuPage's Cleve Carney Museum of Art, an artist recreated an iconic Wheaton landmark in the ukiyo-e style. Guest speakers will highlight the mural as we dive into a summer filled with Japanese art and culture-related experiences. The mural is provided in partnership with the Wheaton Park District, Downtown Wheaton Association, and the City of Wheaton's Fine & Cultural Arts Commission.
