Final Weekend for Carriage Rides & Visits with Santa
This Saturday will be the final opportunity for complimentary visits with Santa and horse-drawn carriage rides in downtown Wheaton. Santa will be in Martin Memorial Plaza, which is on Front Street just west of Main Street, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Carriage rides will also begin from this location from noon to 3 p.m. For more information, visit the Downtown Wheaton Association’s website at www.downtownwheaton.com.
Temporary Warming Shelters Available at Train Station
Note to downtown Wheaton Metra users: Due to the Front Street train station closure, temporary warming shelters are now available on the south side of the train station building (on the north side of the railroad tracks) for Metra riders to use while waiting for their trains. The station remains closed while repairs are made to areas in the station damaged by a Nov. 22 fire.
Keep the Wreath Red
The Wheaton Fire Department decorated its three fire stations with wreaths as part of the Keep the Wreath Red fire safety campaign to remind you to practice fire safety during the holiday season. The wreaths feature red lights, and for each Wheaton fire caused by holiday decorations, the Fire Department will replace one red bulb with a white bulb. Help the Fire Department Keep the Wreath Red by unplugging holiday lights before leaving home or sleeping, being careful with candles and open flames, using flame-retardant decorations, ensuring lights are in good condition and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed, and keeping real trees watered.
Police Auctioning Items on Website
The Wheaton Police Department periodically auctions off surplus, found and obsolete property through the Property Room online auction website. The City recently submitted items to the auction, including jewelry, electronic equipment, tools, children's clothing and fishing gear. To view these items, visit www.propertyroom.com.
Christmas Tree Recycling
If you receive service from the City's garbage/recycling hauler, Lakeshore Recycling Systems, crews will pick up live Christmas trees for curbside recycling on your collection day during the weeks of Jan. 1, and Jan. 8, at no charge and with no sticker needed. Please note that collection will be one day later for all pickups the week of Jan. 1 due to the New Year's Day holiday.
