Gary Avenue Traffic

Gary Avenue Improvement Project Update: Road Reopened to Traffic

The contractor for the Gary Avenue Improvement Project has reopened Gary Avenue to two-way traffic between Harrison Avenue and Jewell Road.

While the roadway is open to vehicles, crews will continue completing the remaining elements of the project as weather permits, including installing the final roadway surface, completing pavement striping, and installing the new traffic signal at Prairie Avenue. During daytime work hours, flaggers will guide motorists safely around active construction, and residents may want to use the designated detour to avoid minor delays. Please use caution when driving in the work zone.

Landscape restoration will be completed in the spring when weather conditions allow for this work.

Thank you for your patience as crews work to complete these important infrastructure improvements.

Crews in Trucks

Public Works Crews Prepare for Winter Weather

Each year, Wheaton's Public Works snowplow drivers get ready for winter by taking a ride through the Snow Rodeo, a training day for crews to prepare for this year's snow routes. Drivers navigate their way through an obstacle course with cones and mailboxes simulating neighborhood conditions. Drivers practice clearing snow (orange cones), backing and stopping, loading up trucks with salt and more. Check out this video to see the training in action.

Now Hiring: Part-time Community Service Officer

The City of Wheaton Police Department is now hiring a part-time Community Service Officer (CSO).

The CSO is a civilian, uniformed position that works under the general direction of the Shift Commander and provides community service to citizens for, normally, non-emergency situations. This role also assists police officers with parking-related issues and other non-criminal offenses.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in a future career in policing and looking to gain valuable experience in law enforcement. For more information and how to apply, visit the City's website.
