Thomas Road Drainage Improvement Project Begins This Week

As part of the City's continued commitment to enhance infrastructure in our community, the City’s Public Works Department has started work this week on a project to replace storm sewers on portions of Thomas Road and Summit Street in northeast Wheaton.

This work area includes Thomas Road from President Street to Summit Street, followed by Summit Street from Thomas Road to Wendover Lane. This project includes installing approximately 2,000 feet of new 12-inch storm sewer and replacing related storm structures. Work is expected to last through the summer and will improve drainage within the right-of-way.

The City is providing further information to residents who will be directly affected by this work. We appreciate your patience as the City works to complete these important infrastructure improvements.

Community Message Regarding ‘Senior Assassin’ Game

The Wheaton Police Department, Warrenville Police Department, and Community Unit School District 200 would like to inform families and our communities about a non-school-related activity among students that has raised safety concerns. Each spring, high school seniors across the nation organize a game often referred to as “senior assassin.” This game spans several weeks as participants try to "eliminate" each other using water guns or Nerf-style toy guns. Students may be seen walking through neighborhoods or hiding in public places with these toy weapons as they try to surprise their opponents.

This is not a CUSD 200-sponsored activity, and “senior assassin” is not allowed on CUSD 200 school property. The Wheaton Police Department and Warrenville Police Department do not condone this activity and would like for our communities to be aware of safety concerns related to this game. This includes the potential for community members to become alarmed if they believe there is an individual armed with a weapon; game participants interfering with traffic and putting themselves and/or others' safety at risk; and other unintentional consequences. Please see the full statement from the Wheaton & Warrenville Police Departments and Community Unit School District 200.

Parking Sign

Upcoming Customer Parking Changes

To ensure that parking closest to downtown businesses is available for customers and is not used for commuter parking or other long-term purposes, the City will be rolling out timed customer parking in the coming months.

A 3-hour time limit will be going into effect for all areas currently designated “customer parking,” effective Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You will begin to see 3-hour customer parking signs installed in the central part of downtown, with 4-hour parking signs installed near the perimeter of downtown.

The new time limits will be enforced as signs are installed, so if you see a timed customer parking sign where you are parked, follow the posted time limit. Check out this video to hear more about the City's parking changes.

City Council Adopts Grocery Tax Ordinance

The Wheaton City Council approved an ordinance at its April 7 meeting implementing a local 1% grocery tax in place of the state grocery tax being eliminated on Jan. 1, 2026. In Wheaton, eliminating the state grocery tax represents a reduction of more than 11% of the City's total sales tax revenues — estimated at $1.6 to $2.2 million annually — which is used to fund essential services our residents rely on such as public safety, public works and capital improvements. Like many Illinois communities, the City of Wheaton has elected to implement this local tax in place of the state's grocery tax to avoid a significant reduction in revenue for City services. Residents will not see a change in grocery tax rate once this change is implemented, as this will replace the current state tax that is distributed to the City.
