Hale Street Tents Open this Friday, May 3From May 3 through Oct. 6, 2024, the block of Hale Street between Front Street and Wesley Street will be closed to vehicle traffic for the return of the Hale Street Tents. Managed by the Downtown Wheaton Association, the Hale Street Tents offer additional space for outdoor dining, live music, and fun. This months-long event has become a community favorite, attracting thousands of diners each year. You will also find numerous opportunities for outdoor dining and live entertainment in other downtown locations and in Wheaton's other shopping districts during warmer months, too. Be sure to check out all that's happening and support the local business community throughout Wheaton.

Road Improvements Begin SoonStarting tomorrow, May 2, contracted crews with R.W. Dunteman Company are scheduled to begin preliminary work to improve Wheaton roads and infrastructure as part of the City’s annual road program. This year’s program will address approximately 5.4 miles of Wheaton roads completed by contracted crews, plus an additional 3.8 miles of roadway improvements completed by the City’s Public Works Street Division. You can see a list of the roads scheduled to be improved through this program at www.wheaton.il.us/roads. The City will be providing updates throughout the spring and summer on this webpage. If your property will be directly affected by this work, you will receive notices with more information and instructions before work begins. We will also post signs in work areas before crews begin working.

Bicyclist & Pedestrian Commission Celebrates National Bike Month & Safety RemindersWheaton's Bicyclist & Pedestrian Commission encourages the community to enjoy more biking and walking in celebration of National Bike Month in May. Whether for fun, fitness or with family, this month is a great opportunity to enjoy biking and pedestrian-friendly activities. To kick-off the month, several Wheaton-area schools will be joining the estimated 1,300 schools nationwide to celebrate National Bike & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, May 8. Other nationwide events include National Ride a Bike Day on May 5; Bike to Work Week from May 13-19; and Bike to Work Day on May 17. With the warmer weather and these exciting events, there will be more pedestrian and cycling activity. The Bicyclist & Pedestrian Commission would like to remind residents to be respectful of all cyclists, walkers, and drivers. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert for cyclists and pedestrians and leave plenty of space for passing. Cyclists are encouraged to obey the rules of the road.

Wheaton Historic Commission Celebrates Preservation MonthIn celebration of Wheaton’s history, the Wheaton Historic Commission has organized events during Preservation Month in May. - Beginning Friday, May 3, the Historic Commission will display blue signs in front of over 160 historic homes and buildings. Residents are encouraged to take a picture of the QR code on each sign to be directed to the new interactive Wheaton Historic Register Map.
- On Thursday, May 9, 6-9 p.m., and Monday, May 13, 6-9 p.m., the Wheaton Public Library will host Home History Research Help. These 30-minute one-on-one sessions will help you learn more about the history of your Wheaton home. Reservations are recommended.
- On Thursday, May 16, 7 p.m., the Wheaton Public Library will host the "Railroads of Wheaton" history lecture. Local historians, Brian & Joyce Ostberg, will present a historical survey of railroads that shaped the foundations and footprint of Wheaton. Reservations are recommended.
