City of Wheaton Names New Chief of PoliceCity Manager Mike Dzugan announced that Deputy Police Chief Princeton J. Youker will be appointed as Wheaton’s 13th police chief, following the retirement of Chief Bill Murphy. Deputy Chief Youker will be appointed as Acting Chief of Police upon Chief Murphy’s retirement on Sept. 25, and he will be officially sworn in as Chief of Police by Mayor Suess during the Oct. 2, 2023 City Council Meeting. The community is invited to attend a reception to meet the new chief from 6-6:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 in the Gamon Room of City Hall, 303 W. Prepare for Extreme Heat this WeekThe National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the heat index expected to reach 110-115 degrees in Wheaton. Plan now for excessive heat over the next few days, and please check on individuals who may need assistance. Shakespeare in the Park Returns Aug. 24-26The Wheaton Park District's Shakespeare in the Park returns Aug. 24-26 at Memorial Park (225 Karlskoga Ave) with the puppet show beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by the main performance at 7 p.m. A community favorite, Shakespeare in the Park is a high-quality annual theater event presented free of charge to the public by the Wheaton Park District and Wheaton College’s Arena Theater. Temporary Road Closures for Wheaton North High School March-A-Thon on Aug. 26The Wheaton North High School March-A-Thon will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023. The following streets will be temporarily closed from 8 a.m. to noon for the event: - Naperville Road, from Illinois St. to Indiana St.
- Washington St., from Seminary Ave. to Indiana St.
- Seminary Ave., from Hale St. to Washington St.
- Hale St., from Union Ave. to Wesley St.
- Karlskoga Ave., from Wheaton Ave. and Hale St.
- Wheaton Ave., from Karlskoga Ave. to Oak Ave.
- Oak Ave. from West St. to Wheaton Ave.
- West St., from Prairie Ave. to Oak Ave.
- Papworth St., from Armbrust Ave. to Amy Lane
- Armbrust Ave., from Papworth St. to Darling St.
- Darling St., from Thomas Road to the end of Darling St.
These streets will be staffed with uniformed police personnel to assist and direct traffic during this time. All roads used for this special event will be temporarily closed for approximately 30 minutes to let the band pass safely. Once the band has cleared the roadway, it will be immediately reopened for vehicular traffic. Residents, citizens, and motorists are being asked for their cooperation in not moving the barricades to ensure the safety of the participants. Motorists may experience temporary traffic delays and choose to alter their travel routes to avoid these areas.

Senior Assistance Program Accepting ApplicationsThe City of Wheaton is now accepting applications for the Senior Assistance Program, an annual program administered through the City’s Commission on Aging that provides monthly financial assistance to qualifying seniors. “Smashed: Wheaton Train Wrecks” History Presentation to Take Place on Wednesday, Sept. 6Join the City of Wheaton Historic Commission for “Smashed: Wheaton Train Wrecks” at the Wheaton Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. Trains have been rolling through downtown Wheaton for 173 years. Local historian Bob Goldsborough will be providing a colorful look at rail mishaps in Wheaton and surrounding areas, from the biggest and most tragic disasters to less-known pileups. Festival of Cultures Coming SoonDon’t miss the Festival of Cultures on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 1-5 p.m. at Memorial Park. The free, family-friendly festival presented by the Wheaton Community Relations Commission, includes live entertainment, cultural booths, food trucks, and a passport activity for kids. Enjoy a variety of music and dance performances from the Memorial Park Bandshell including: - Salsa del Norte - This lively salsa and Latin variety band was founded in 2016 by a group of Northern Illinois University graduate students in Afro-Cuban music and jazz. Get ready to dance!
- Midwest Soarring - Formed in 1996 the Midwest Soarring Foundation works to educate the public about American Indian cultural issues and build community among all. Their performance will showcase Native American dancers in native dress performing several traditional dances.
- Murphy Roche Irish Music Club - Founded in 1997, the club performs traditional Irish music. The group is composed of students of all ages and skill levels who perform, want to learn, or just enjoy traditional Irish music.
- Funkadesi - For the past 25 years, this high energy group has entertained audiences with its blend of Indian bhangra, Bollywood & folk with reggae, funk and Afro-Caribbean music. This is their fourth year performing at the festival!
- Wheaton College Gospel Choir - More than 35 years ago, this group was established by students who desired to worship God through black Gospel music. The choir’s diversity bridges cultural and spiritual gaps and performs and tours at various locations throughout the U.S.
