Wheaton City Sign

Wheaton Turns 164 Years Old

Happy 164th birthday, Wheaton! In the 1830s, a group of New England natives started a settlement in the prairie of Illinois to farm the land and harvest timber, and on February 24, 1859, the settlement was formally incorporated as the Village of Wheaton. It took until 1880 for the population to approach 1,000, and in 1890, Wheaton's village status changed to city. Today, our population exceeds 53,000. Celebrate 164 years of Wheaton's incorporation this Thursday, Feb. 24. You can learn more about Wheaton's early history through the Historic Commission's section on the City's website.

Education and Enforcement Campaign Focuses on the

‘Move Over’ Law

Did you know that Illinois has a mandatory “move over” law, known as Scott’s Law? Under this law, if you are approaching an emergency vehicle that is stopped and has its lights on, you must: slow down, drive with caution, and move over to another lane. Reduce speed if changing lanes is unsafe. The Wheaton Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting an enforcement campaign for Scott’s Law violations during the week of Feb. 27-March 3, 2023. Give all emergency vehicles space so they can operate safely. We appreciate your cooperation to help protect Wheaton’s first responders while they perform their jobs.
