Watering Restrictions End
Annual watering restrictions will conclude on Sept. 15. However, the City still encourages you to practice conservation techniques such as not watering your lawn during the hottest part of the day to avoid evaporation.
Bicyclist & Pedestrian Commission Leading History Bike Tour on Saturday
Wheaton’s Bicyclist & Pedestrian Commission invites the community to take part in the Great Fires of Wheaton History Bike Tour of Wheaton. The event will begin from the Wheaton Public Library’s west side at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Bob Goldsborough, longtime Wheaton resident and current writer for the Chicago Tribune, will lead a leisurely 6-mile bicycle tour of the sites of significant fires that have shaped Wheaton and provide historical commentary at each site.
The event is open to cyclists of all levels and ages. (Participants younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) All riders must provide their own bicycle and wear a bike helmet. Participants must also sign a digital waiver prior to participation.
Program Explores the Roots of DuPage’s Latinx Community
In this virtual program at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 presented by the Wheaton Public Library in partnership with the City’s Community Relations Commission, Sara Phalen, Director of the West Chicago City Museum, will discuss the migration of Mexican and other Latinx groups to DuPage County over the past century. Hear about the industry and opportunity that brought migrants to our area and the contributions they have made in helping shape the economies and culture of DuPage. Registration is required for this virtual event.
Latinx, Hispanic, Latino, Latine: Terminology History & How Each is Embraced Today
Join the Wheaton Public Library, Wheaton’s Community Relations Commission and Wheaton League of Women Voters virtually at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 as Dr. Catalina Maria Johnson gives us a brief overview of the history and origins of the range of terminology used to refer to a person of Latin American origin or descent. Her presentation will be followed by a panel discussion of local residents as they share their views and experiences embracing the terminology. Registration is required for this program.
