Wheaton Police Department Responds to Fatal Crash

On Tuesday, March 23, the Wheaton Police Department responded to a traffic crash between an SUV and a motorcycle at the intersection of Butterfield Road and Briarcliffe Boulevard. Traffic on Butterfield Road was shut down in both directions until approximately 3:30 p.m.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 19-year-old male, suffered severe injuries in the crash. He was transported by Wheaton Fire Department Paramedics to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Wheaton Fire Department Extinguishes Structure Fire

On Monday, March 22, the Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 700 block of South Gables. Upon arrival, fire crews identified a fully involved detached garage with multiple vehicles on fire. The fire was impinging upon several single-family dwellings adjacent to the garage.  


The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. All occupants safely escaped the adjacent houses, and the incident did not result in any injuries.

Good Citizens Awards

Commission Accepting Nominations for Good Citizens Awards

One of the brightest spots in the past year has been the way Wheaton residents have come together in the face of difficult times to help each other and rally for those in need. These are among the types of extraordinary actions that Wheaton's Community Relations Commission is looking to recognize as they call for nominations for the annual Good Citizens Awards.

The commission is seeking nominations for individuals and groups for Wheaton’s 2021 Good Citizens Awards now through April 26. 

Nominees must be current Wheaton residents who have done something for the benefit of Wheaton and its citizens. The categories for nominees are: Student (elementary, middle, high school or college), Adult, and Group.
This award helps recognize those who make the generous and often extraordinary contributions that make Wheaton an outstanding community. This may be volunteer service for a school, religious institution, nursing home, civic group or nonprofit organization.

To nominate someone, fill out an online application at www.wheaton.il.us/goodcitizen by Monday, April 26, or mail your application to Wheaton City Hall, Attn: Andrea Rosedale, 303 W. Wesley St., Wheaton, IL 60187.

The Community Relations Commission will review nominations and will honor award recipients at the May 17 City Council meeting.

In-Person Early Voting Now Open for Upcoming Consolidated Municipal Election

In-person early voting for the upcoming Consolidated Municipal Election is now open, visit the DuPage County website for more information about in-person early voting hours and a list of additional voting locations.

Please note that the voter registration period has ended, and if you are not registered to vote then “grace period" registration is available up until the day before the election. Voters that register during “grace period” registration must vote at time of registration.

City Seeking Part-time Emergency Management Specialist

The City of Wheaton Fire Department is looking for a knowledgeable and innovative Emergency Management Specialist to join our team! This part-time position assists our Fire Chief with the coordination of emergency management and homeland security operations that directly impact our community.

Vaccine

More Vaccines Coming to Wheaton; Expanded Eligibility & Reopening Update

On March 19, the DuPage County Health Department and the State of Illinois made several important announcements regarding Covid-19 vaccine availability in Wheaton, new groups that will soon be eligible for vaccines, and the state’s next steps toward its Restore Illinois reopening plan.

The DuPage County Health Department announced it will begin receiving significantly more vaccines for the Community Vaccine Clinic at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton through a partnership with the Illinois Department of Health, allowing it to administer as many as 1,000 doses per day. Also, as of March 22, new groups are now eligible in Illinois for vaccination, with the expansion of eligibility to all Illinois residents age 16+ beginning on April 12.

The state also outlined steps that Illinois will soon be taking in its "Bridge to Phase 5" of the Restore Illinois reopening plan. This will include some increases for capacity in many types of spaces, such as for dining, health & fitness, museums, etc.

City Welcomes Extract Juicery to Downtown Wheaton

On March 19, the City of Wheaton’s Mayor Phil Suess joined the Downtown Wheaton Association for a ribbon cutting event to welcome Extract Juicery located at 114 N. Main Street to the Wheaton community. The City is thrilled to see new businesses continuing to choose Wheaton as their home.

Federal Tax Filing Deadline Extended to May 17

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced on Wednesday, March 17 that they would be extending the time to file taxes from April 15 to Monday, May 17.

Wheaton Public Library Virtual Event - Marget Hamilton: Wheaton's First Female Mayor

On Thursday, March 25, join Wheaton journalist Bob Goldsborough as he discusses the extraordinary accomplishments of Wheaton’s first female mayor, Marget Hamilton, including her fight for fair housing and forming the Wheaton chapter of the League of Women Voters. This virtual event is co-sponsored by the Wheaton Community Relations Commission, Wheaton League of Women Voters, and the Wheaton Public Library.
