As the City continues its multi-year program to add sidewalks where none currently exist on either side of the street, crews are starting to survey areas identified to receive sidewalks in the fall.
The City Council’s goal with this program is to increase pedestrian safety by ensuring that every neighborhood street in Wheaton has a sidewalk on at least one side of the street. The order that sidewalks will be installed through this program is based on criteria such as the type of street, proximity to an arterial/collector street, and the geometry of the roadway.
Pending available funding, the following streets are scheduled to receive sidewalks on one side of the street this fall:
- Birch Drive from Beecher Avenue to Manchester Road
- Westwood Drive, from Beecher Avenue to Manchester Road
- Beecher Avenue, from Westwood Drive to Birch Drive
- Crest Street, from Parkside Drive to Lakeside Drive
- Parkside Drive, from Crest Street to Delles Road
- Lakeside Drive, from Crest Street to Delles Road
- Myrtlewood Lane, from Roosevelt Road to the existing sidewalk south of Lakeside Drive
- Summit Street, from Geneva Road to Daly Road
- George Street, from Main Street to Gamon Road
- Avery Avenue, from Summit Street to the existing sidewalk west of Wood Street
- Driving Park Road, from Geneva Road to Washington Street
- Gables Boulevard, from Aurora Way to the existing sidewalk just north of Aurora Way
- Indiana Street, from the existing sidewalk east of Sunnyside Avenue to the existing sidewalk west of West Street
- Daly Road, from Stoddard Avenue to Summit Street
- Greenwood Drive, from Lynwood Lane to the existing sidewalk to the north
- Cadillac Drive, from Santa Rosa Avenue to Webster Avenue
- Ranch Road, from Washington Street to Driving Park Road
- Elm Street, from Aurora Way to Greenwood Drive
- Kay Road, from Glencoe Street to the cul-de-sac
You may see crews out surveying the right-of-way on these streets, including the parkway, which is the City-owned area closest the street. Crews will be identifying existing conditions such as grade/slope of the parkway, existing healthy trees, etc. to determine the proposed sidewalk’s location.
Property owners on these street segments will receive further notices from the City to keep them informed throughout this process. We will provide affected property owners with project designs that include the planned location and layout of the new sidewalks before they are installed. There will be an opportunity for property owners to provide feedback regarding the proposed designs.
