At approximately 8 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019 the Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 0N300 block of Papworth in unincorporated Wheaton. Upon arrival, fire crews identified heavy fire at the rear of the single-family dwelling with fire rapidly extending to the second floor and attic. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. The home sustained heavy damage and an adjoining structure received minor exterior damage.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The incident did not result in any civilian injuries, but one firefighter was transported from the scene to a local hospital for a minor injury. The firefighter was subsequently treated and released from the hospital.

Investigators from the Wheaton Fire Department and the Dupage County Fire Investigation Taskforce are conducting a fire investigation. The cause of the fire is classified as undetermined at this time and damage estimates are unavailable. The DuPage County Building Department was called to the scene. The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by the DuPage County Sheriff and several fire departments from neighboring communities.
