The City of Wheaton and Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission are partnering with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, DuPage County and SCARCE to offer an opportunity for DuPage County residents to safely dispose of these materials at an upcoming event:
- Syringes & epi-pens
- Documents for shredding (limit 3 boxes)
- Mercury thermometers
- Latex & oil-based paint (see fees for disposal below)
From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 6, in the City’s Commuter Lot 9 (located at Carlton & Liberty Drive), the DuPage County Sheriff’s office will assist in offering the first collection event in DuPage County for syringes and epi-pens. Collecting syringes helps keep them out of landfills, and out of the hands of people who may reuse syringes for drug use. This event will collect any type of syringe for safe disposal – including those used for pets. Syringes must be brought in a plastic container, such as a laundry detergent bottle. Syringes will be collected whether they are empty or filled with medication.
You can also safely dispose of documents with sensitive information. Three shredding trucks will be available on-site for residents who want their documents shredded and safely disposed. Bring up to 3 office-sized boxes of documents, and be sure to remove things such as binders, report covers, file folders, photos, rubber bands and plastic bags.
This event will also collect mercury thermometers, thermostats and barometers for safe disposal.
In addition, E-Paint will collect oil-based and latex paint for a fee. Disposal of latex paint will cost $1 per quart, $3 per gallon, and $10 per 5-gallon pail. Disposal of oil-based paint and stains will cost $4 per quart, $8 per gallon, and $20 per 5-gallon pail. Oil-based paint can be accepted even if it appears dried out.
