Sewer Service Billing Rates

In the same bill as your water service bill, you are billed for stormwater and sanitary sewer service. Residents within City limits are billed monthly for sanitary sewer service charges at the current rate of $1.40 for every 100 cubic feet of water used and a stormwater management fee of $0.75 for every 100 cubic feet of water used. In addition, all sewer customers are assessed a flat monthly fee of $1.50 to finance storm sewer infrastructure projects. These fees pay for the City to maintain 168 miles of sanitary sewer and 175 miles of storm sewer. The City's sanitary sewer rate does not cover the cost of sewerage treatment.

Separate Bill for Sewerage Treatment

You will also receive a bill from the Wheaton Sanitary District or the DuPage County Public Works Department for sewerage treatment. This is because the City of Wheaton provides water service and sewer conveyance, but the Wheaton Sanitary District and the DuPage County Public Works Department, which are separate governmental agencies, provide sewerage treatment. Most of the City is served by the Wheaton Sanitary District, and the far southeastern portion of the City is served by DuPage County for sewage treatment.

Causes of Unusually High Water Use

Occasionally, residents will contact the Finance Department regarding an unusually high water and sewer bill. The most common reasons for unusually high water usage include:

  • Lawn sprinkling and landscape watering
  • Leaky sinks and toilets
  • Water-powered sump pumps and other water-using equipment
