Water Conservation and Protection Program

The City of Wheaton has partnered with the DuPage Water Commission in committing to the DuPage Water Commission’s Water Conservation and Protection Program. The program’s overall goal is to achieve a 10-percent reduction in per person water use within 10 years. The purpose of the program is to deliver a consistent message promoting water conservation to all DuPage County water users while providing DuPage Water Commission member utilities with the tools needed to effectively develop and implement local water conservation efforts. The City of Wheaton issued a proclamation on December 21, 2009, to participate in and promote the program.

The Water Conservation and Protection Program is the first regional effort to establish consistent practices for increasing water conservation among Lake Michigan water users in Illinois. The program is being driven by a commitment to good stewardship and prudent long-term planning rather than any short-term projection of water shortage. The program is consistent with the goals of the Great Lakes Compact, a legally binding agreement between the eight Great Lakes states that provides a standard for the management and protection of Great Lakes water.
