Book Recycling

The nonprofit group SCARCE,  School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education, will accept books in any condition for reuse or recycling. As a book "rescue" organization, SCARCE accepts books of all kinds and gets them to children in need, schools and other organizations.

All books, no matter what their condition, will be accepted, including:

  • Children's cardboard books
  • Textbooks and encyclopedias, no matter how old
  • Damaged books
  • Hardcover and paperback books

Nonprofit organizations such as schools, libraries, hospitals, universities, resource centers, after-school programs, jails and other nonprofits can pick up as many books as they want from SCARCE's inventory of rescued books. Books that can not be used by someone else will be recycled.

SCARCE also collects items such as buttons, school supplies, office supplies, old crayons, old gym shoes, ink jet cartridges, and much more for either reuse or recycling. Visit SCARCE's website for more information.

SCARCE is located at 799 Roosevelt Road, Building 2, Suite 108, in Glen Ellyn. The organization is dedicated to educating students, teachers, residents, businesses, and the general public to conserve natural resources and energy, prevent pollution, reduce waste, recycle and compost organic materials.
