Garbage Program Information

PLEASE NOTE: The information below is for Wheaton's service with Advanced Disposal Services, which ends on Sept. 30, 2016. Read about Wheaton's new garbage/recycling program with Lakeshore Recycling Systems starting Oct. 1, 2016.

Wheaton has been using Advanced Disposal Services (formerly Veolia) as its waste hauler since July 1, 2008. The Resident Guide (pdf) contains a summary of the program in a convenient printable format, or you can read on for the program basics.

Garbage Stickers

Garbage, yard waste and leaves require stickers, which can be purchased from the same sticker vendors and at City Hall, 303 W. Wesley St. You can also call 630-587-8282 to order stickers. See the Sticker Information page for prices and vendor locations. Each container (which can be a maximum of 33 gallons in size and 50 pounds in weight) or bag must have one blue sticker attached. Blue stickers can be used for either garbage or yard waste.

If you do not want to use garbage stickers, you have the option of setting up cart service, in which you can rent a 95-gallon garbage cart and receive a monthly bill. To set up cart service, call 630-587-8282.

Collection Day

If you are unsure about your collection day, please see the Garbage Day Map (pdf).

Pickup times

Garbage, recycling and yard waste should be placed at the curb between 7 p.m. the night before collection and 6 a.m. the day of collection. Containers should be removed from the curb by 7 p.m. on the day of collection.

There will be no garbage, recycling and yard waste collection on the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Collection will be provided one day later for the remainder of the week during which the holiday falls.

Bulk Items/White Goods/Construction Materials

Each bulk item (an item that doesn’t fit in the 33-gallon container) needs to have one garbage sticker attached. For large/bulk item pick-ups, residents are required to call and notify Advanced Disposal at 630-587-8282 a minimum of 24 hours prior to their scheduled garbage pickup.

  • Carpet rolls should be no larger than 4 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter, and each roll needs a garbage sticker.
  • White goods, which are appliances containing hazardous components (such as refrigerators, hot water heaters, microwaves or humidifiers) require 3 garbage stickers apiece and will be picked up separately at the end of the day.
  • Small amounts of construction materials require one garbage sticker per stack (maximum 4 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter).

Commercial and Multi-Family Waste Haulers

The City licenses commercial waste haulers to serve multi-family and commercial properties with a centralized dumpster system. See the Commercial and Multi-Family Waste Haulers section for more information about licensed waste haulers.

Household Hazardous Waste

Please do not include household hazardous waste (such as pesticides, paint, motor oil or cleaning solvents) in your garbage. The Regional Household Hazardous Waste Facility is at 156 Fort Hill Drive in Naperville. For more information, visit or call 630-420-6095. This is administered by the City of Naperville.

Backdoor Service/Special Collections

Backdoor service is available on request for a $35 monthly fee plus one garbage, yard waste or leaf disposal sticker per container. Billing is by quarterly invoice between the resident and the garbage hauler. To arrange backdoor service, call 630-587-8282.

Special collections, including large quantities of garbage, household construction material, move-in/move-out rubbish, etc., will be collected at a rate per cubic yard. One cubic yard is the minimum amount of garbage required for a special collection. Call 630-587-8282 to request a free estimate. Once they evaluate the quantity and provide an estimate, you may pay via credit card or by personal check at the time of the pickup.
