WHEATON, Ill. – The City of Wheaton will be discontinuing its pilot battery recycling program effective March 12 due to the costs associated with the program.
In March 2009, the City began collecting household batteries at City Hall, the City’s Public Works building, Police Department, Fire Station 1 and the Wheaton Public Library. The purpose was to recycle batteries – which are classified as hazardous waste – to keep the heavy metals and other toxic substances out of landfills. While the program was successful in collecting more than eight tons of batteries, the City is no longer able to fund the program due to budget cuts.
For more information about where you can safely dispose of batteries and other hazardous waste, see the DuPage County Recycling Guide (pdf).
