WHEATON, Ill. – On July 1, all Wheaton postal addresses south of Roosevelt Road will receive a new zip code: 60189. Addresses north of Roosevelt Road (and including Roosevelt Road) will retain 60187 as their zip code.
“We’re streamlining our operations to provide better service for our Wheaton postal customers,” said Wheaton Postmaster Joseph Pisano. The additional zip code will allow the Post Office to provide faster service and earlier mailings by dividing Wheaton addresses into regions.
P.O. boxes that are based at the downtown Wheaton Post Office (122 N. Wheaton Ave.) – which currently use the zip code 60189 – also will be affected. These P.O. boxes will change to the 60187 zip code to enable all addresses north of and including Roosevelt Road to use the same zip code. P.O. boxes based at the Danada Square location will not be affected.
After July 1, there is a one-year grace period to comply with the change, so items addressed using the former zip code will still be processed and delivered until July 1,2009.
The Post Office advises customers whose zip code is changing to notify billing companies, family and friends of their new zip code.
“As you correspond with people, notify them over the course of the year of your new zip code,” Pisano said.
The Post Office is sending postcards notifying customers who will be affected by the change. If you have additional questions, call the Wheaton Post Office at 630-668-3530.
