Learn How Wheaton's Sister Cities Celebrate Fat Tuesday
The Wheaton Sister City Commission looks for ways to help Wheaton residents get a sense of the culture in our sister cities Karlskoga, Sweden, and Wheaton Aston, England. Did you know that the Swedes and the English have their own version of Mardi Gras, which is “Fat Tuesday” in translation? This is traditionally the season to gobble up all the rich foods before one gives them up for a time.
Care to share in the flavor of Fat Tuesday, known as Fettisdagen in Sweden? The Swedish version entails the consumption of sweet yeast rolls filled with marzipan or raspberries and whipped cream spiced with cardamom. The English tradition calls for Shrove Tuesday Pancakes served with lemon and sugar.
You can search online for “Shrove Tuesday Buns” for an English language recipe for the Swedish “Fastlagsbullar” or search for “Shrove Tuesday Pancakes” for the English treat.
Also, the Wheaton Sister City Commission has again worked with Suzette’s Creperie on Front Street, which has added both treats to their menu in limited quantities from Feb. 21-28, 2017. Special orders require 48 hours notice.
