Police Services

The Wheaton Police Department provides a variety of safety and well-being services to residents. For more information about any of the listed services that follow, call the Wheaton Police Department at 630-260-2161.

Animal Control

When a resident loses a pet, he or she immediately should contact the Wheaton Police Department non-emergency number at 630-260-2161 to report the pet missing. A Police Services Representative will ask questions about the pet and record the information.

When stray pets are found, the Police Department attempts to match them up with lost animal reports and reunite pets with their owners. Pet owners also should contact DuPage County Animal Control at 630-682-7197 to report a missing pet.

When a Community Service Officer picks up a stray pet and there is no reported owner information, the animal is taken to DuPage County Animal Control.

Animal Noise Regulation

The Wheaton Police Department enforces the portion of Wheaton’s City Code that regulates barking dogs. It states that it is unlawful for anyone to keep or harbor any animal which by loud, frequent or habitual barking, howling, yelping, whining, or other oral noises creates a disturbance that unreasonably disturbs and causes annoyance to any person of normal sensitivities. A “noise disturbance” is caused by any animal which barks or makes any other oral noises that unreasonably disturb any person of normal sensitivities for:

  • 10 minutes or more in any one-hour interval between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
  • 5 minutes or more in any one-hour interval between 11:01 p.m. and 6:59 a.m.

Child Safety Seat Inspections

Child safety seat inspections are available by appointment on Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. This is a free service and is available to anyone, not specifically Wheaton residents. Please call 630-260-4867 to make an appointment.

Child Safety

What to do if your child is missing:

  • IMMEDIATELY report your child missing to local law enforcement by calling 911 (there is no 24-hour rule).
  • Limit access to your home until law enforcement officials have arrived.
  • Give law enforcement officers your child’s Identification Kit.

Safety Tips for Children:

  • Remind them not to talk to strangers
  • Be sure your child knows his or her full name, address and phone number
  • Know where your child is and who he or she is with at all times
  • Set boundaries for places children may go
  • Children should always tell parents when they’re leaving a location or neighborhood
  • Stress the importance of the “buddy system”

Emergency Key Holder Cards Program

The Wheaton Police Department continually updates emergency key holder cards. These cards allow Police to contact indicated individuals should an employee of the Police Department find an open door, open window, or any other unusual occurrence at a business after hours. If you need to update any key holder information, please contact the Wheaton Police Department at 630-260-2161.

Guardian Program

The Guardian Program is a computerized telephone calling system used by the Sheriff's Office to provide qualifying DuPage County residents the reassurance in knowing that their well-being will be looked after.

Who qualifies?

  • Any DuPage County resident who is over the age of 62.
  • Any DuPage County resident who is physically disabled and requires daily contact to ensure their welfare.

The member must have the ability to punch digits on their telephone keypad. The system will contact members at any time on any days requested. At those times, the system will call the member. When the member receives the call, he/she will punch a four-digit code on their telephone keypad to verify that he/she is okay. If the member does not respond, the police dispatcher will attempt to contact the home. If still unsuccessful, a pre-designated emergency contact will be notified. If all else fails, an officer will be sent to the member’s home.

DuPage County residents can register by picking up an application at the Wheaton Police Department or the Sheriff's Office. They can also request to have an application sent to them by calling the Sheriff's Office at 630-682-7256. Visit the DuPage County Sheriff's Department website.

This service is offered the third Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment. The fee is $20 per person. Citizens are required to bring in a fingerprint card from the requesting party.

To make an appointment, call the Wheaton Police Department at 630-260-2161. The Police Department does not provide fingerprint services for the purpose of Immigration. Anyone needing fingerprints for Immigration needs to contact the Immigration office in Chicago at (312) 353-9607.
