Start Date: November 1, 2009
Completion Date: Summer 2011
Estimated Project Cost: $9.28 Million

Project Description

The City of Wheaton has been working for several years on plans to replace the Wesley Street/Manchester Road Bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks just west of the City’s downtown. The project proposes:

  • the complete removal and replacement of the existing roadway bridge
  • demolition and replacement of the retaining wall along Manchester Road
  • reconstruction of the approach roads leading to/from the bridge
  • reconstruction of the Illinois Prairie Path structures over Wesley Street, Front Street, and the railroad tracks
  • enhancements such as decorative street lighting and fencing, and pedestrian access.

The geometry of the bridge will allow vehicles to turn left from the bridge onto Bridge Street, a turn that currently is prohibited due to structural deficiencies of the existing bridge. A traffic signal will be placed at the intersection of Wesley Street and Manchester Road (just south of the bridge) to accommodate turning movements due to sight obstructions. The bridge is being designed to structurally withstand the weight of all legal-weighted trucks, including fire apparatus, school busses, and semi-tractor trailer combinations.
